An illustration series that seeks to explore the different artforms of Chinese script through its history, unique shape and composition. I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty and sophistication of Chinese typography. It amazes me that each character contains depth, meaning and a form of thinking. Hopefully, I can communicate these traits with my illustrations!

[01] 团团圆圆 — means reuniting with your loved ones. Playing with the circle form of 圆 (means round), this phrase is written on the glutinous rice balls (汤圆) which also symbolises family cohesion. 🥣
[02] 长命百岁 — means living to a ripe old age! 👵🏼👴🏼 For this illustration, the beard of the God of Longevity (寿星) is extended to form and communicate the meaning of this Chinese phrase.
[03] 年年有余 — means having prosperity in the new year. It also sounds the same as ‘may there be fish every year’ in Chinese 🐟 Fish is often chosen as a motif to represent the meaning of this phrase!
[04] 魚 (fish) 🎣 Many Chinese characters come from the shape of the object/animal and fish is one good example - look at the head, body, fin and tail!
